Memorial of Anti-Fascist Resistance

Memorial of Anti-Fascist Resistance

The Memorial of Anti-Fascist Resistance is located in Prague - Kobylisy. It was built on the site of the former Kobylisy military shooting range. During World War II, Czech patriots and resistance fighters were executed here in mass. After the war, the area of the former shooting range was respectfully renovated by the citizens of Prague. The current memorial was created in 1975, and in 1978, the Kobylisy shooting range was declared a National Cultural Monument. The Kobylisy shooting range was established in 1890 on the outskirts of the village of Kobylisy. Initially, infantry was trained here, and later the area became a recreational site. A stable was built at the shooting range, where horseback riding was practiced. During World War II, the Nazis set up an execution site at the rear of the shooting range, and the stable was used as a prison.

St. Wenceslas Church

St. Wenceslas Church

The still-standing Romanesque basilica was built before 1200, initially without vaults, having a flat ceiling. During the Hussite Wars, it was first damaged and then passed into the ownership of the Utraquists. In the 1470s, the Utraquists repaired the church and added Gothic vaults. A century later, in 1572, a beautiful porch was added. After the Battle of White Mountain, the church was handed over to Catholics, like all other churches. In 1648, it was set on fire by the Swedes, but the strong walls and vaults endured. In 1712, the church received a Baroque tower placed above the chancel. Significant alterations occurred in the 1770s, one of which resulted in the unfortunate reshaping of the original square inter-aisle pillars into their current round form.

Libeň Castle

The castle is located in Prague's Thomayerovy Gardens. A Gothic fortress stood on the site of the current castle from 1363. The original cellars, the ground floor of the southern wing, and the western wing have been preserved to this day. In 1595, the fortress was purchased by Eliška Hoffmanová, who had it rebuilt into a comfortable Renaissance castle with sgraffito decorations in the shape of writing tablets. In 1662, the property passed into the ownership of the Old Town of Prague, where it served after a Baroque renovation until the mid-19th century. A reminder of this period is the city’s coat of arms above the entrance portal of the main façade. During the Rococo reconstruction in 1769-70, the castle was given its present appearance.

Menhir v Dolních Chabrech

Menhir v Dolních Chabrech

The origin of the menhir is unknown, but historians attribute it to the ancient Celts. The Chaberský menhir is also nicknamed "Stone Servant" because it resembles a hunched male figure. It is a monolith made of diorite, known as a "test stone." According to one legend, a treasure is supposed to be buried near this stone. In 1910, the landowner, where the menhir stood, decided to investigate. While digging, he did not find a pot of gold coins or a chest of jewels, but something possibly more interesting: another stone, smaller and made of a different material. It is believed to be the base of a dolmen, which was a table-shaped stone, a Celtic sacrificial stone. However, the top slab could not be found.

Synagogue Libeň

Synagogue Libeň

The Libeň Synagogue stands near the Palmovka metro station, on U Synagogy street. A Jewish quarter was established in Libeň as early as the 16th century. It significantly expanded in the mid-18th century when Jews, who were expelled by Empress Maria Theresa from inner Prague, moved here. The ghetto, with a large Jewish population, had its own cemetery near the Libeň Bridge and its own self-government building. Initially, a small synagogue from 1592 served religious purposes. However, it was often threatened by floods, so it was demolished. The local Jewish community purchased the land, and in 1846, they laid the foundation stone for a new synagogue. It was completed and officially opened in 1858.
